Dr Bobby Sarma Baruah is a National and International Award-winning Indian filmmaker, Film Researcher, Producer and Screenwriter whose work focuses on the indigenous cultures of Assam and the North Eastern part of India.

Her debut feature, Adomya (Indomitable), focused on a young widow who tests positive for HIV-AIDS. It was adjudged the best film in the Spiritual Category at the 13th Dhaka International Film Festival. Adomya travelled to almost 25 national and international film festivals worldwide. 

Her second venture, Sonar Baran Pakhi  (The Golden Wing), produced by ASFFDC & Co-Produced by BB Entertainment Trade Private Limited,  a biopic of the legendary Assamese folk singer late Padmashree  Pratima  Barua Pandey, won the audience award at the 15th Dhaka International Film Festival and the Grand Jury Award at the 15th Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) 2017. It was screened in almost 30 international film festivals.

Her third feature film is Mishing (The Apparition), which won her the Silver Lotus Award (Rajat Kamal) in 66th National Film Award. The film is in the Sherdukpen language and is based on the novel Mishing, written by Sahitya Akademi Awardee Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi. Mishing (The Apparition) was selected for the 24th Kolkata International Film Festival, and 23rd International Film Festival of Kerala and it screened at almost 20 other international film festivals around the globe.

Dr Bobby Sarma Baruah’s fourth feature film named “Sikaisal” is in the Tiwa dialect which is now in the post-production stage.

She has recently completed the production of her fifth feature film “Deoka, Walking in the Air”. The film is in the Assamese language.

Apart from five feature films, Dr. Bobby Sarma Baruah has several documentaries, television series, short films, television commercials, and music videos to her credit. Dr Sarma Baruah began her professional career in media in 2006, starting with making quickies for All India Radio, Guwahati Assam. She also produced and directed music video films Suntora, Sohoror Godhuli and Sohoror Tita Mitha from 2006-2008. She made several documentaries and quickies based on regional agriculture from 2009-2012. She directed a popular TV serial for Doordarshan named Jivan Jatra, and various short films like Waiting for a Call, Deuta and Mirror, a thirteen-episode documentary on folk culture of different ethnic communities of Assam. In the year 2009, she produced a stage drama Maya, and she directed a documentary film Santosh based on the Indian Post. She also made quickies on behalf of the World Bank from 2012-2014. After that, she went on to make a six-episode serial for Axom Sarba Siksha Abhijan Mission in 2012-13. She made 3 documentaries for Vigyan Prasar, Ministry of Science and Technology 2019-2022 and 15 episodes of a Hindi Series 2018-2019 for DD-Arunprabha, Doordarshan Bhawan, New Delhi. Very recently she completed a documentary film for Sahitya Akademi, 2022.

She also developed great oratory skills which led her to often take part in debates and poetry gatherings. She began with her literary skills in the 5th grade, publishing her poetries in local regional newspapers and ever since have been continuing with her creative literary pursuits.

Dr. Bobby Sarma Baruah did her Master of Arts in Assamese literature, Postgraduate Diploma in Communication and Journalism and B.Ed. from Gauhati University. She did a one-and-a-half year Diploma course in Total Film Making from the Photography Institute of Assam. She also attended a month-long Film Appreciation course organized by the National Film Archives of India and the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII). She has completed a foundation course in digital cinematography conducted by the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII) and the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC). She earned Senior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, on the Topic “Ethnic Jewellery With Attire of the Eight States of North East India” She completed her PhD from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University on the topic Reflection of the folk culture of Assam in Assamese cinema”.

Early Life

Born to a family of creative minds, Baruah’s father was a sculptor, a painter and an artist of high caliber. She inherited the inventive and artistic genes of her father which later on shaped the course of life. Her mother was also an artist who laid the very foundation of freedom of expression among her children by teaching them to sing and dance , thus stimulating them with their originative ideas . Oldest among the three siblings, she bloomed creatively under the encouragement of her mother and learnt to sing and dance, participating in various cultural competitions, winning numerous prizes. 

Education

She completed her Schooling from Gohpur and she completed her graduation from B. Barooah College Guwahati, majoring in Education. She then completed her bachelor of education degree and went on to complete her masters degree in Assamese Literature from Gauhati University. She then did her second Master degree in Communication and Journalism from Gauhati University, Assam. She completed her PhD from the Department of Communication and Journalism, Guwahati University on the topic “Reflection of the folk culture of Assam in Assamese cinema”. She enrolled herself in the school of Photography owned by Amulya Manna to shape up her creative pursuits. She has also attended the Film Appreciation Course in FTII, Pune. She won a senior national fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India in 2014 for a research project on ethnic jewellery and costumes of North East.
